Far Away From Home
Traveling to Udayapur (eastern part of Nepal) was an adventure I’ve always wanted. This year during the Dashain vacation I had the chance to visit. I was so very excited to experience different lifestyles other than my own community.
I went to Udayapur with Roshany-sister from Maya. Her hometown is in a village in Udayapur disctrict. I saw Gaighat, the district capital, and it was slightly different from Damauli city (near Maya). Because it is so near the Indian border, things were very cheap and also all transportation was easily accessible.
We spent more time at the village with Roshany’s family. It was my first time celebrating this festival as my family is Christian and don’t celebrate it. It was a new experience for me and a very fun one. During the festival it rained heavily for 4 days leaving us with no choice but to stay at home. Regardless, we had fun watching movies, eating and making friends with the community. I noticed that the neighborhood had a tradition of inviting people to eat at every house once during the festival. People were so kind and welcoming they made me feel like I was their daughter.
